Recently NFL has pitched a proposal to the union for long-term care for former players and their spouses. The union has rejected this proposal because they were worried that to many former players would not be able to pass the screening test done by Transamerica insurance company. They were also concerned that those players have pre-existing conditions. They estimated that about only 2500 would pass and qualify for the insurance. An example it would offer is 30-40% discount for both players and spouses.
Besides this proposal the union does offer financial assistance to those players with dementia or brain related problems. MORE information can be located on NFL.com
